Multiple student organizations came together Thursday to offer their appreciation and support for U.S. veterans in a joint statement.
“Veterans Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by our former brave service men and women and reminds us that freedom is never free. Our liberties, rights, and sovereignty, of which too many of us take for granted, are paid for by the blood, sweat, and tears of those who choose to serve and fight for their country.
It is only appropriate that we take this day to thank those distinguished and honorable individuals whose service has allowed our nation to stay safe and secure. America will forever be the home of the free because of the brave.”
The statement was issued by the Indiana University chapters of Young Americans for Freedom, The ISI Buckley Society, Turning Point USA, College Republicans, and The Network of Enlightened Women.
Veterans Day was also observed by students, faculty, and other IU community members early Thursday morning in front of Franklin Hall. The joint Indiana University Army and Air Force ROTC color guard raised the flag, and Indiana University Jacobs School of Music student Keanu Cover trumpeted out “The Star Spangled Banner.”
Remarks were given by retired U.S. Army Colonel and IU Vice Provost for External Relations Kirk White; the commander of Crane Army Ammunition Activity, Col. Santee Vasquez; and the battalion commander of the Army ROTC program at Indiana University, Meghan Andrews.
Vasquez remarked on the day’s purpose, telling attendees, “Veterans Day is the time to remember all those who have served, past and present. On Veterans Day, we honor the brave men and women from all walks of life and all services who have stepped forward to defend our country and our nation throughout our history.”
