New Organization Aims to Connect Students in Innovative Ways

A new nationally reaching organization, the Freshman Club, has developed an interesting and innovative way of connecting students and assisting in their college experience. Although they started at Purdue, the Freshman Club now has a presence at schools across the country, including in Hawaii. Their goal is to network with students early, largely in their Junior and Senior year of high school, and see them through their senior year of college. They largely target students through social media and have a significant following on their Indiana University Instagram account, @thefreshmanclub_iu.

Students who follow their school’s Freshman Club can learn about the culture of the campus, connect with and get advice from fellow students, and build a social network even before stepping onto campus. The organization’s founder, Tristin van den Bulk, told The Crimson Post that he wanted to create opportunities “for students to meet other students” and, through the Freshman Club, helps students with dating, finding friends, and building relationships at their university.

The Freshman Club also hosts parties to further provide students with a social outlet and opportunities to meet people and build relationships. Currently, most parties are either tailgates or boat parties, but van den Bulk is excited to announce a new chapter of the Freshman Club, concerts. He hopes to soon launch exciting and widely appealing concert series that will feature diverse host of artists. Van den Bulk feels that students often don’t have access to the musicians they want to hear at their universities and aims to change that. Revenue generated by ticket sales for events goes to covering the Freshman Club’s expenses, to creating new experiences for students, and, most uniquely, to providing scholarships to deserving students.

Despite their young age, the Freshman Club has already had a major impact on the lives of thousands of students at IU and throughout the country. This impact is likely to only grow as the organization expands, draws in more students, and continues to provide entertainment, advice, and opportunities for students across the U.S.
