In the recently held IU Student Body Presidential election, the Elevate ticket, comprised of President-Elect Ky Freeman and Vice President-Elect Madeline Dederichs, emerged as the preliminary victors. During the election, students chose from three tickets, Inspire, Elevate, and Legacy. As originally reported by the Indiana Daily Student, Inspire was disqualified on April 6, and Elevate was deemed the winner with 2,699 votes to Legacy’s 1,772.
Freeman, who also serves as the president of the Black Student Union, is an active Twitter user, primarily using his presence to promote the Elevate ticket and their highly progressive platform. However, he has also posted a number of tweets that many feel are problematic, including one claiming “white mediocrity will be the death of this country,” in reference to Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination and confirmation as a United States Supreme Court justice.
He also used a racial slur to describe African Americans who were videoed clapping for former President Donald J. Trump, calling their actions “COONERIFIC.”
Freeman also replied to a tweet of white toddlers standing behind a yard sign promoting former President Trump, stating “This that Caucasian Kiddy (obscenity).”
Notably, the election won by Freeman is now in dispute, with the IU Student Supreme Court recently overturning multiple rulings made by the Election Commission.
